Naturally self-cleaning, temperature-regulating, and antibacterial, sheepskin offers ideal comfort for little ones. To keep these natural properties intact, gentle care is essential. Especially for baby products, it’s important to avoid chemical residues. Sheepskin can be cleaned delicately and effectively without compromising its structure or softness.
Why proper sheepskin care is so important
Sheepskin is naturally self-cleaning, temperature-regulating, and antibacterial. To preserve these valuable properties, gentle care is essential. Especially for baby products, it’s important to avoid chemical residues sheepskin can be cleaned carefully and effectively without losing its structure or softness.
How do I keep my sheepskin soft and fluffy?
Using a special sheepskin brush is the gentlest way to care for sheepskin. The flexible, yielding bristles prevent hair from being pulled out and help restore the fleece to its natural, fluffy texture. When dry, dirt can simply be brushed out, reducing the need for frequent washing.
The brush fits comfortably in the hand and glides smoothly over the sheepskin—without excessive pulling, offering maximum protection for both the leather and the fibers.
Which care products should I use for sheepskin and which should I avoid?
Many conventional detergents for textiles or wool can damage the leather structure, cause sheepskin to become stiff, or alter its color. WERNER CHRIST C7 sheepskin detergent is specially developed for delicate sheepskin fibers. It is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and helps preserve the fleece’s natural softness and color intensity.
With just 30–50 ml per wash, it’s also very economical—250 ml is enough for around 9–10 washes, while 500 ml lasts for 18–20 washes. Adding a mild fabric softener can further support the elasticity of the leather.
How do I care for sheepskin properly?
Sheepskin is naturally self-cleaning and therefore only needs to be washed when heavily soiled. For everyday care, airing it out, shaking it, or gently wiping small stains with a damp cloth is usually sufficient. If a deeper clean is required, follow these three steps:
1. Washable at 30°
WERNER CHRIST BABY sheepskin products can be washed on a wool cycle at a maximum of 30°C. Do not overload the washing machine, use only a gentle spin cycle, and make sure all hook-and-loop fasteners are closed. Products with metal parts should always be washed in a fabric laundry bag.
2. Use the right detergent
For proper care, we recommend WERNER CHRIST C7 sheepskin detergent. This environmentally friendly, highly concentrated formula is specially developed for sheepskin. Depending on the level of soiling, use 30–50 ml per 10 liters of water or per wash cycle. Adding a standard mild fabric softener helps maintain the leather’s elasticity. Regular detergents for textiles or wool are not suitable. Also make sure to remove any old detergent residues from the washing machine beforehand.
3. Dry gently
After washing, sheepskin products can be tumble-dried at temperatures of up to 40°C. The movement in the dryer helps keep the leather soft and supple. Alternatively, allow the sheepskin to air-dry in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources at all costs. While drying, gently pull the sheepskin back into shape from time to time and finish by brushing it with a sheepskin brush to restore its fluffy texture.
